UNC Charlotte's College of Education, in partnership with Freedom School Partners and the Children’s Defense Fund, is hosting the 4th Annual Freedom School.

The Children’s Defense Fund’s Freedom School summer programs are free, literacy-based learning experiences that integrate conflict resolution and social action in programs that promote social, cultural, and historical awareness.  In Charlotte, Freedom Schools are operated in partnership with community organizations such as faith groups, corporations, and colleges/universities to serve children (called Scholars) in grades K–8.  UNC Charlotte is piloting the first high school class of Freedom School this summer (2013).

Project Overview

Freedom School Level IV Scholars will culminate their summer program with a trip to Washington DC where they will meet Marian Wright Edelman, the founder of the Children's Defense Fund, and Senator Kay Hagan of North Carolina.  In preparation for their trip, the Scholars studied the causes and prevention of gun violence, populations most threatened by guns, and the impact of gun control legislation.  On this website the Scholars present their knowledge and creative ideas to decrease gun violence in our communities.
